Already Condemned

September 9, 2016

I Corinthians 2: 4 But thanks be to God, who always puts US on display in Christ and through US spreads the aroma of the knowledge of Him in every PLACE.15 For to God WE are the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 16 To some WE are an aroma of death leading to death, but to others, an aroma of life leading to life

I Cor 7: 10 For godly grief produces a repentance not to be regretted and leading to salvation, but worldly grief produces death

Matthew 27:3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. 4 “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!” 5 So Judas threw the silver into the SANCTUARY and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.

Hebrews 12: 15 Make sure that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble and by it, defiling many. 16 And make sure that there isn’t any person like Esau, who sold his birthright in exchange for one meal. 17 For you know that later, when Esau wanted to INHERIT the blessing, he was rejected because Esau didn’t find any opportunity for repentance, though he sought it with tears.

All humans are born already condemned

God does not need to harden any sinner to condemn that sinner.

God does not need to teach the gospel to the non-elect sinner the gospel in order to condemn the non-elect sinner.

God does need to teach the gospel to the elect sinner in order to justify the elect sinner.

W know that God’s severity is just, but why does God harden some non-elect sinners with the gospel and orain that other non-elect sinners never hear any gospel?

John 3: 19 “This, then, is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids the light, in order that their deeds not be exposed. 21 But anyone who LIVES BY THE TRUTH
comes to the light

God rejects some sinners on purpose and unconditionally.

Equal ultimacy means that God ordains not only creatures but sinners on both sides.
God ordains sinners as a means to redemption.
God ordains sinners as a means to destruction.

Equal ultimacy does not mean that the wages of sin are God’s gift. Equal ultimacy does not mean that the gift of life is God’s wages for our works.

Romans 6: 23 For the WAGES of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is lasting life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Equal ultimacy does NOT mean that the death of the non-elect is a different kind of lasting life.

John 10:29 you do not believe because you are not of my sheep

I Peter 2:8 They stumble because they disobey the message. They were destined for this.

Mark 4: 11 Jesus answered them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to those OUTSIDE, everything comes in parables 12 in order that

they look and look,
yet not perceive;
they listen and listen,
yet not understand;
otherwise, they would turn back—
and be forgiven.

II Thessalonians 1: at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with His powerful angels, 8 taking vengeance with flaming fire on those who don’t know God and on those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of lasting destruction from the Lord’s presence and SHUT OUT

Revelation 22: 10 He also said to me… the time is near. 11 Let the unrighteous go on in unrighteousness; let the filthy go on being made filthy; let the righteous go on in righteousness; and let the holy go on being made holy.” 12 “Look! I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me to repay each person according to what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, in order that to have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the…idolaters

James White–“What is required on God’s part to bring about the salvation of a sinner, the self-giving of the Son of God, raising someone to life, these are some of the greatest miracles in all the history of God. God doesn’t have to do any of that to bring the non-elect into the position of his final condemnation.”

The non-elect truly have their own guilt. They are born guilty by God’s imputation of Adam’s sin to them. God also imputes the guilt of Adam to the elect, but God’s intention to justify His elect sinners never waivers. The elect never merit justification. The elect have no merits of their own, nor can they boast in themselves. Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.

The word “reprobate” in the Bible means “disapproved” or “condemned”. Even elect sinners are born “reprobate”. The sheep are never goats. But the sheep are not born justified

Arminians want to say—you are accepted, accept your acceptance, but what if you don’t, well that’s on you. But even when Arminians say that “the no is on you”, many of them try not to say that the “yes is on you” . That would shed too much light on the con-game being played by Arminians.

It’s God yes, not your yes, but if you say no, well that’s you. But if you don’t say no, that means you say yes, but that yes is not yours, your yes is God’s doing in you. So it was yes, by default, you were born justified, but then you lost it by your no. But of course, only in one sense, you never lost it, because God will still be saying yes to you, even as you perish in the second death. As the Arminian CS Lewis explained, “hell” is only locked by you on the inside.

Infralapsarians flatten out Romans 9 to try to make it seem reasonable and non-objectionable, but at least they do read the default as we all being guilty and condemned sinners. They explain that God causes elect sinners to say say, and that God does not need to cause non-elect sinnrs to say no, because all of us are born saying no.

But the Arminian default run the other way–God is saying yes to everybody, and you will be justified, unless you say no. Your no will stop God from getting what God wanted but your no will be an excuse (theodicy) to explain why it’s still not God’s fault because at least you had your “chance”.

The Creation is for the Purpose of the Redemption of the Elect

March 12, 2012

Ephesians 1:9-11–” making known to us the mystery of his will,
according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for
the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will…”

The “common grace” theory supposes that God has a second purpose for
history, an intermediate cultural purpose. But “all things were created for Christ”. (Colossians 1:16) Jesus Christ “is before all things” (Colossians 1:17).

Jesus Christ is first in the counsel of God, logically before the
decree of election (and non-election). The elect are chosen in Christ
before the foundation of the world, and this means that logically
Christ was before the elect in the counsel of God.

Those who say that Christ died for every sinner think that they honor
Christ by saying that the decree for Christ to die is before the
decree to elect some sinners. They claim in this way to put Christ
before election.

Not only Arminians but many who call themselves Calvinists want to
place election after the decree to make atonement, so that the
atonement will not be restricted to the elect. They think of election
as something that causes the elect to believe, but they will not teach an atonement only for the elect.

But election in Christ is first! The death of Christ is not the cause
of God’s election in love. God’s election in love is the cause of the
death of Christ. Jesus Christ is first. Jesus, the incarnate, the
eternal Son of God in the flesh, is the foundation of election by
being Himself the object of election. “All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things.”

This means that the creation is for the purpose of the redemption of
the elect. This also means that God does not have a second “cultural
only” purpose for the creation.

God’s purpose in history is to bring glory to Jesus Christ. He is not simply the one who makes election work. Jesus Christ Himself is first. Jesus Christ Himself is chosen first, before all the others. All the other elect were chosen in Jesus Christ, and not apart from Jesus Christ. Those God loves are “chosen in Him”. Ephesians 1:4

Non-Election is Not Conditioned on the Sinner

May 25, 2011

Ephesians 3:9-11. “To make all (even gentiles) see what is the fellowship/union of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places would be known by the called out elect the manifold wisdom of God according to the permanent purpose which He decreed in Christ Jesus our Lord”

Ephesians 2:4-5 “But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, has quickened us together with Christ…”

It is wrong to say that non-election is conditioned on sin: both the elect and the non-elect are sinners–if sin were the cause/condition of non-elect, then all sinners would be non-elect. The reason for non-election is like the reason for election. God’s justice is no less sovereign than God’s grace.

The texts in Ephesians remind us that there is more to know about God than His sovereign justice: His glory is also revealed in His sovereign love and in His sovereign wrath. To know His name is to know Him as the one who has mercy on some and who hardens others.

I deny that non-election is conditioned on sin. God’s very first concern is to manifest His glory in discriminating between sinner and sinner, so that election in Christ from the beginning is an election of sinners. To be outside Christ from the beginning is to be non-elect sinner.

God does not wait for sinners to sin, and then decide to pass some of them by. In the very purpose to elect and to not elect for His glory, God is the Subject and sinners are His objects. God’s choice is the first thing.

Sin is not the first thing, and then God reacts. Neither is creation the first thing, and then God reacts. Sin is necessary if God is to choose between sinners. Only because of God’s choice to choose between sinners, does God ordain sin.

We often hear the phrase “election is not salvation” so that “election is UNTO salvation”. Or that “election is not the gospel” but that election is what causes people to believe the gospel. I want to criticize these often-stated contrasts.

Of course the word “salvation” can be used in different senses. But if the righteousness Christ earned is not for the elect until the elect believe, it makes no difference if you say that the righteousness was earned only for the elect or also for others besides the elect. In any case, it is not the righteousness which is the cause of believing.

The effect of denying election in the gospel is to make Christ’s work of obedience not be the ONLY cause of salvation. It makes the work of the Spirit in the sinner causing the sinner to believe becomes not a result but a condition of Christ’s work.

This false gospel will end up not glorying in the cross but putting the Spirit’s work in the sinner in the determinative place. This false gospel, in which Christ‘s work is not the cause, will also say that “election is not the gospel” but only that which makes sinners believe the gospel.

II Cor 5:14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, in order that those who live will no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

Jonathan Gibson, “The Glorious, Indivisible, Trinitarian Work of Christ”, From Heaven He Came, p 35

p 352—”Some conclude that the efficacy of Christ’s work occurs only at the point of faith, and not before. This ignores the fact that union with Christ precedes any reception of Christ’s work by faith. It is union with Christ that leads to the efficacy of Christ’s work to those who belong to Him.”

ps: One common dodge of election is to deny that God knows about or cares about time. Instead of saying that God is both outside time and inside time, the typical procedure is to deny that God is concerned with order and sequence and time.
