We are not “Flying Away”, We Meet Jesus and Come back with Him to Earth

August 15, 2020

John 17—Jesus spoke these things, looked UP TO HEAVEN and said:
Father, the hour has come.
Glorify Your Son
in order that the Son glorify You,
2 for You gave the Son authority over all flesh
in order that the Son give lasting life
to all You have given Him.
3 This is lasting life:
that they know You, the only true God,
and the One You have sent—Jesus Christ.
4 I have glorified You on the earth
by completing the work You gave Me to do.

It is a very bad over-reaction against those who say that Christ was made corrupt to deny redemptive history and to falsely claim that Christ was never MADE anything.
It would be wrong to deny that God the Son BECAME incarnate, both God and Human. It would also be wrong to deny that God the Son was first imputed with the guilt of the elect, and then that LATER IN HISTORY God the Son was raised from His death (His death because of that imputed guilt).
Because all the elect will be justified, Christ was raised from the dead.

Because Christ’s death paid for all sins imputed to Him, those sins are no longer imputed to Christ, and so it was that Christ was raised from the dead. This is history. This is news.

2 Cor 5:19 In Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them…God MADE the One who did not know sin to MADE sin for us, in order that we be MADE the righteousness of God in Him.
Romans 6: 9-10 Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death NO LONGER rules over Christ 10 Christ DIED TO SIN once for all time.

John 17: 5 Now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence
with that glory I had with You
before the world existed.

The Roman army would be gone for a campaign of two or three years. Finally, the army would return, leading captives in chains. They would camp outside the city and send in a messenger to alert the Senate and the people that the army had returned. When everything was ready, a trumpet was sounded. When Jesus comes back to earth, the justified elect, both dead and alive, will be caught up in the air to meet Him, not to stay up there, but to join His return in triumph.

There is a popular song called “I’ll Fly Away”. It not only has no gospel but also much falsehood. (Some glad morning when this life is o’er,
I’ll fly away To a home on God’s celestial shore, when I die, hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly away, oh glory, I’ll fly away).

“I’ll Fly Away” is a song sung by slaves chained together in the daily torture of being worked unto death, imprisoned by “Christian church members” who believed in states’ rights and “the spirituality of the church”. (no protests, except when we the church ourselves disobey the local authorities)

Hebrews 9:22 Christ, having been offered once TO BEAR THE SINS of many, will APPEAR a second time (NOT to bear sin at a future time) but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.

1 Thessalonians 4:15 We who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep”.

John 6: 40 Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have lasting life, and I will raise them up AT THE LAST DAY

Ephesians 2: 5 –Made us alive with Christ
Even though we were born by nature children of corruption, that is not what the Ephesians 2 text is teaching. Even the elect were born corrupt because even the elect were born UNDER WRATH.

We were not only dead in our nature or “spiritual state”. We were
dead in our guilt before God, not only before our conscience, but
under God’s wrath, not only in our “spiritual experience”

Christ was NEVER spiritually dead, and the Holy Spirit NEVER quickened Christ’s spiritual nature. Our Surety was under guilt imputed, and Christ being “quickened” means Christ being made alive from the dead, no longer condemned for our sins. Therefore, OUR being quickened WITH Christ means that the “making alive” in view in Ephesians 2 is a change from one legal state to another legal state.

There is a difference between election and justification.
There is a difference between effectual calling and justification.
There is a difference between putting on immortality and receiving the lasting life of the age to come.

John 5: 24 Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has lasting life and WILL NOT COME UNDER JUDGMENT.
Those who have passed from death to justification (lasting life of the age to come) will not put on immortality until Jesus comes again.

John 5: 25 “I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live

Even though there is a difference between justification and effectual calling, every person who is justified before God has also been regenerated by God’s gospel. Those who do not yet hear God’s voice in the gospel are still in condemnation before God.

Even though Christ’s second coming has always been in God’s purpose, that resurrection day has not happened yet.

John 5: 28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come out

John 17: 6 I have revealed Your name
to those You gave Me from the world.
They were Yours, You gave them to Me,
and they have kept Your word.
7 Now they know that all things
You have given to Me are from You,
8 because the words that You gave Me,
I have given those words
They have received those words
and have known for certain
that I came from You.

Mark 16: 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” a young man dressed in a white robe
told them. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.
He has been resurrected! He is not here! See the place where they put
Him Now He is going ahead of you to Galilee.

John 11: 25 Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life.”
I John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have HEARD, which we have SEEN with our eyes, which we LOOKED upon and have TOUCHED with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made visible and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the lasting life, which was with the Father

2 John 1:7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world; they do not
confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh

John 1:14 The Word BECAME flesh and took up residence among us. We SAW His glory, the glory as the Only Begotten Son from the Father,

Romans 8:3 God condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son IN
FLESH like ours under the guilt of sins imputed

I Timothy 3:16 God was visible in the flesh. God was justified in the Spirit. God was seen by angels. God was proclaimed among the nations. God was BELIEVED ON in the world. God was taken up in glory

Hebrews 10:20 God has opened for us a new and living way through the
curtain (that is, His flesh)

Job 34: 14 If God withdrew the spirit and breath God gave, every living thing would PERISH together and mankind would return to the dust.

Our hope is NOT always having “an immortal soul” . Our hope is Christ’s death, Christ’s resurrection and our future resurrection at Christ’s second coming.
Neither John 17 or any other Scripture teaches that we go to heaven to be with Jesus by dying. We will only meet Jesus by being raised from the dead when Jesus comes back to earth.

I Corinthians 16: 21 This greeting is in my own handPaul. 22 If anyone does not love the Lord, a curse be on him.  Come Lord Jesus, Come.

“Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have lasting
life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6:40)
