Redemptive History–God’s Oath/Covenant Given After the Mosaic Law

God’s elect were once far away, not only in our own conscience and mind, but also before God’s justice.

It is a very bad over-reaction against those who say that Christ was made corrupt to deny redemptive history and to falsely claim that Christ was never made anything.

It would be wrong to deny that God the Son BECAME incarnate, both God and Human. It would also be wrong to deny that God the Son was first imputed with the guilt of the elect, and then that God the Son was raised from His death (His death because of that imputed guilt)

2 Corinthians 21 He MADE the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, in order that we BECOME the righteousness of God in Him.

I Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be MADE alive.

I Corinthians 15 is not describing all sinners. I am not denying that all humans are imputed with Adam’s guilt. But I Corinthinas 15 (and Romans 5-6) are about “us all” who were elect in Christ.

I am making two points.
Point one– These texts are not describing the non-elect. The non-elect are born in Adam and will stay in Adam. The non-elect will be condemned and perish when Christ returns to earth. (the second death)

Point two, and the emphasis here and now—all the elect are born guilty and condemned in Adam. All the elect need to be before God “legally buried with Christ”. Not only do all the elect NEED to become dead with Christ, but God’s plan (Ephesians 1 is that all the elect WILL BE made alive by means of Christ’s death.

Romans 6:7 is not describing a new birth but a “being justified from sins”, when each elect sinner receives by God’s imputation the legal value of Christ’s death. (They receive legally the righteousness.Romans 5:11,17) )

Ephesians 2:12 AT THAT TIME you WERE without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But NOW in Christ Jesus, you who WERE far away HAVE BEEN brought near BY THE BLOOD of Christ.

A W Pink–“Receiving the reconciliation is not our laying down our own rebellion against God. Rather, we receive by imputation that which Christ’s sacrificial death has procured for us. “All things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:18). The “enmity” of Ephesians 2:16 cannot refer to that which existed between Jews and Gentiles, for that has been disposed of in verses 14, 15. “Enmity” is here personified (“slain”), as “sin” is in Romans 8:3. Thus, the verse means that all the sins of God’s people met upon Christ, and Divine justice took satisfaction from Christ’s death.”

Romans 6:9 Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over Him.

Romans 6:17 But thank God that, although you USED TO BE slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching YOU WERE TRANSFERRED TO

The redemptive history happens in Christ. But the legal application of that redemption to the elect is not by the Holy Spirit giving the new birth, but by God’s imputation. If you personally are elect in Christ (God’s purpose), then in time, God will cause you personally to believe the gospel, and that believing will only happen when you have received the objective righteousness (something real, something that is something)of Christ’s death by God’s imputation.

I Corinthians 15:23 But each in his own order: Christ, the firstfruits; afterward, at His coming, those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father, when He abolishes all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign until He puts all His enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy to be abolished is death

I Corinthians 15: 45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”. The last Adam BECAME a life-giving spirit.

Romans 9:”For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the PURPOSE of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calls.

Galatians 3:24 The law, then, was our guardian UNTIL Christ (that we be justified by faith). 25 But SINCE that faith HAS COME we are NO LONGER under the guardian, 26 for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Romans 2:17 For in the gospel God’s righteousness is revealed …The righteous will live by faith 18 For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of those who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

Psalm 110: this is the declaration of the Lord to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand UNTIL I MAKE Your enemies Your footstool.” 2 The Lord will extend Your mighty scepter from Zion. Rule over Your enemies.
3 Your people will willing on Your day
4 The Lord has sworn an oath and will not take it back:
“Forever, You are a priest like Melchizedek.”

I Samuel 7:11 ‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord Himself will make a house for you. 12 When YOUR TIME COMES and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish His kingdom.

Hebrews 7 For this Melchizedek remains a priest forever.
Abraham gave him a tenth of everything.
First, his name means king of righteousness,
Then also, king of Salem, meaning king of peace;
3 without father, mother, or genealogy,
having neither beginning of days nor end of life,
but resembling the Son of God—

Hebrews 7:26 For this is the kind of high priest we need— holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 Jesus does not need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do—first for their own sins, then for those of the people. Jesus ACTED ONCE FOR ALL TIME when He offered Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak, but the promise of THE OATH THAT COMES AFTER THE LAW appoints a Son, who has been permanently perfected.

The oath to David came after God gave law to Moses. This oath from God was not made before creation. God’s oath was “cut into history” quite a long time after God had ‘ccut into history” the Mosaic covnant

I Samuel 7:18 Then King David went in, sat in the Lord’s presence, and said, Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? 19 What YOU HAVE DONE was a little thing to You, Lord God, for You have also spoken about Your servant’s house in THE DISTANT FUTURE …. 25 Now, Lord God, fulfill the promise forever that You have made to Your servant and his house. DO AS YOU HAVE PROMISED as You have promised, 26 in order that Your name will be exalted

There is no need to deny the difference between promising and doing, in order to proclaim that God will do all that God has promised.

Psalm 2: 7 I will declare the Lord’s decree:
He said to Me, “You are My Son;
today I have BECOME Your Father.
8 Ask of Me,
and I will make the nations Your inheritance
and the ends of the earth Your possession.

Worship the Son or the Son will be angry
and you will PERISH in your rebellion,
because the wrath of the Son is revealed in time
All (and only) those who take refuge in Him are blessed

    Romans 5: 17 speaks of “those who receive the free gift of righteousness” and how they reign in life through the one man Christ Jesus. This receiving is not the sinner believing. It is not an “exercise of faith”.

    The elect “receive” the righteousness by God’s imputation. The elect do not impute their sins to Christ. Nor can the elect impute Christ’s righteousness to themselves until after God has already imputed the righteousness. (Romans 6–reckon what God has reckoned) God is the imputer.

    The receiving of the righteousness is not the same as the righteousness. The imputation is not necessarily at the same TIME as when Christ earned the righteousness. God declaring the elect to be joint-heirs with Christ in that righteousness is not the same as the righteousness. There is a difference between imputation and righteousness.

    Our continuing acts of faith toward the gospel are not the righteousness. But neither is God’s imputation, nor the indwelling of Christ which follows that imputation, the righteousness.

    This is a recognition of the biblical difference between the atonement and justification. The difference I am taling about is NOT that the elect “do something” to get justified. The difference I am talking about is that, God imputes the righteousness, and this means we need to see a distinction between God’s imputing and God’s righteousness.

    Even before they are justified, the elect are entitled by Christ’s work to justification. But the elect are not justified until God imputes the righteousness to them.

    Well, all this sounds logical enough, but what does it practically mean? Is not the safest and most far away place from Arminianism and legalism and conditionalism to agree with those who teach eternal justification and who deny “two legal states” (for us, and sometimes, even for Christ)?

    I challenge the notion that the best way to counter salvation conditioned on the sinner is to teach eternal justification, so that conversion becomes only knowing that you were always justified.
    The safest and best place to be is not the most extreme away from what the Arminians say. The safest and best place to be is what the texts of the Bible says.

    I have no big problem with saying that the elect were “in some sense” always saved, but only if this “sense” is that they are elect. In other words, because of election, the elect are never in danger of perishing. The elect are never in danger of not being regenerated. They will be, but they are not born regenerate. The elect are never in danger of not being justified. They will be justified. Romans 4: 25 teaches that Christ was raised from the dead because of justification. This is not only Christ’s justification, but also the justifiction of all the elect, both those who died before Christ died and those elect who are not yet born (condemned in Adam). Not only God’s sovereignty but God’s justice will demand this.

    As far as I can tell, many folks who teach eternal justification do NOT teach “presumptive regeneration”. The gospel does not tell anyone: you are elect. The gospel tells everyone: God loves the elect and Christ’s death will save the elect. you might be elect but you won’t ever know that until you are justified. As long as you are under the wrath of God, you cannot and will not believe the gospel. As soon as God imputes Christ’s righteousness to you, you will understand and believe. BELIEF IN THE FALSE GOSPEL IS EVIDENCE OF GOD’S WRATH ON YOU NOW

    But the eternal justification gospel says to Arminians—you might be already justified That to me is a problem. Where the Arminian wants to tell everyone that God loves them, those who teach eternal justification (or presumptive regeneration) want to tell SOME of the unconverted that they are not only elect but alreay justified. But the Bible does not encourage this kind of logic

    I Thessalonians 1:4 “For we know, brothers, loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to not only in word but in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.”

      We can disagree and divide over certain doctrines, without imposing on other people that they can only talk about certain “gospel parts” of the Bible

      Mark McCulley: i do not agree that Gods election in Christ was based on God’s foreknowledge of God’s justice. God first elected some\ sinners in Christ, and only because of that, sent the Surety to die for them. It was no part of the work of Christ to make God love the elect The very fact of Christ becoming incrante earth at all was proof of the divine love for the elect. The business of the justifying atonement, therefore, was to propitiate the God who already loved the elect.

      I John 4:8 GOD IS LOVE.9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Begottn Son into the world in orer that we would live through Him.
      10 God’s love consists in this– not that we loved God, but that God loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

      I Peter 1:20 Christ was felected before the creation of the age but was revealed at the end of the ages for you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Christ from the dead and gave Christ i john glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

    There are dangers to describing sin as corruption instead of guilt, because guilt is cause of inability. There is great error in describing “made sin” as the “spiritual death” of Christ. Christ did not become corrupt, and Christian do not become righteous by infusion or by impartation (of an extra nature to make two) but by God’s legal imputation. …..How many Deaths did Christ Die? , by J C Settlemoir, in The Grace Proclamator and Promulgator, July 2016

    If Christ Died Spiritually Before He Yielded up His Spirit, Then His Sacrifice was not Acceptable. Philippians 2: 8 He was obedient to death. Christ could not be obedient in a swoon. Was Christ obedient all the Way? If so, Christ did not die before His death.

    (mark– there are many who teach that Christ’s death is not His righteousness or His obedience. They teach that Christ’s vicarious law keeping was His righteousness, and that His death (or deaths) was only for the purpose of remission or getting back to neutral).

    At the Mount of Transfiguration, Christ’s physical death was the topic of discussion. He took along Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. Luke 9: 29 As He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly, two men were talking with Him—Moses and Elijah. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of His DEATH which He was about to ACCOMPLISH in Jerusalem.

    Moses and Elijah were not alive at the Mount of Transfiguration—if

    was it a separate resurrection so that Abraham and Moses do not have to wait for that day with the rest of us (Hebrews 11:39-40)

    If “time gaps” result in “fake justice”, why do you even need Christ’s death ever imputed to you? Are you not justified as soon as your sins are imputed to Christ? Once your sins are imputed to Christ, they are His problem, whether He ever dies to pay for them or not. Why must the payment be imputed to you, as long as your sins are not imputed to you?

    It would be wrong to claim that God the Son ALWAYS IN ‘ETERNITY” was incarnate, both God and Human, because in truth God the Son BECAME incarnate. It would also be wrong to claim that God the Son was never imputed with the guilt of the elect, as it would be wrong to claim that Christ’s death changed nothing so that Christ continues to be imputed with the guilt of the elect. God the Son was raised from His death (Christ’s death was because of that imputed guilt)

    The word “departure”, which could be translated as “exodus”,means Christ’s coming DEATH (his being “lifted up”) and His -then-future death was FINISHED, ACCOMPLISHED Jesus is NOW one person with two natures. Jesus is NOT two persons, and the vision of Jesus in Luke 9 is not only of “the divine person”. Nor does the gospel talk about something preachers call “infinity” Donald Mcleod. “Jesus was glorified NOT because Jeesu was always God and NOT because Jesus was God incarnate BUT BECAUSE JESUS FINISHED THE WORK (John 17)

    The Son of David became the righteous sufferer, who was also accused by accusers. Yet in His case, unlike David (and you and I), He was completely innocent. How did He respond before His accusers? Twice Isaiah 53:7 has the identical phrase from Psalm 38:13, “He did not open His mouth.” Why was the perfectly righteous Son of God silent before His accusers, who ultimately put Him to death on a cross? One, because He was bearing our sin, and if He spoke up, He’d have to say our names. And two, because (like David) He trusted God the Father to vindicate Him–that is, to justify Him by raising from the dead. But in His case, His vindication was not being acquitted of any guilt, for He had none! Rather, as a righteous sin bearer, He endured on our behalf the wages of sin, which is death (Rom. 6:23). Since He had no sin, His resurrection was His vindication, that is, His justification, by His Heavenly Father declaring Him “not guilty” but righteous. “He was justified by the Spirit” (1 Tim. 3:16). Since He bore the full indignation of God toward our sins, He has been raised from the dead for our justification, as well (Rom. 4:25). Out of love for us, it pleased YHWH to crush Him, when He made His Son’s soul sick by becoming the ultimate trespass-offering (Isaiah 53:10). The justification of the One is counted for “the many.” No wonder then Isaiah 53:10 prophecies that “the Righteous One shall declare the many to be righteous, since He bore their iniquities.”

    “I confess my iniquity, and I am sorry for my sin” (Ps. 38:18).

    Awareness of your isolation and your accusers
    The psalmist is also greatly aware of his isolation. As he bears his own sin and God’s displeasure of it, those who used to be close to him – his friends and his companions – are now far off (v. 11).
    But the psalmist is not totally alone. There is another group that is near: his persecutors who are pursuing David’s destruction and seeking his calamity (v. 12). They desire to see David’s downfall so that they might boast and exalt over him (v. 16). This is not a small group, but rather his enemies are countless and numerous (v. 19). Ultimately, these enemies seek to capitalize on David’s sin and use it as an opportunity to accuse him (v. 20).
    It is striking that “to accuse” in verse 20 is literally “satan” (שׂטן) in Hebrew, which is the root for Satan’s name in Zechariah 3:1-2, as the accuser of the brethren stands before God to accuse His people of their sin. David’s human accusers embodied Satan and his demons’ accusations against the people of God.
    Perhaps this is the worst part of our fall into sin. Besides feeling isolated from loved ones, the enemy–and his demonic horde, which are many–stand to accuse us before the Righteous Judge. They know (better than us) that God must punish sinners in accordance with His justice. Yet this is the occasion were David waits for YHWH to intervene as his advocate.
    3. Awareness of the rescuing, justifying grace of God
    How does David respond to these attacks of accusation from his accusers? He “does not open his mouth” (v. 13). Instead, he trusts the Lord to advocate and intercede for him in verse 15:
    “Truly, I put my hope in You, O YHWH! You–You will answer, O Lord (Adonai) my God!”
    the psalmist has no answer–no defense–for the accusations and condemnation upon him, both from God, and from his accusers. Thus his only hope is YHWH Himself–that He will answer on his behalf. His hope is that YHWH Himself will be His salvation (v. 22). In this context the word “to answer” means to testify in someone’s defense in a court of law. How then can David put his hope in a holy God who promises He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished (Ex. 34:7)?
    The title of this psalm in the very beginning is telling. Notice it says right above verse 1 in your English Bible (although it atually is verse 1 in the Hebrew text), “A Psalm of David, for the Memorial ) Offering.” The word zachar, means “to cause to remember” or “to acknowledge,” and the word “Offering” is implied.
    The Memorial Offering is likely connected to the occasion described in 1 Chronicles 16:1-4 when David had the Ark of the Covenant brought into the tabernacle, and they offered whole burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD. “Then David appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the Ark of YHWH to acknowledge (same word, לְהַזְכִּיר) and to thank and to praise YHWH, the God of Israel.” (1 Chron. 16:4). So glorious was this occasion of bringing up the Ark of the Covenant into God’s dwelling place that David saw fit to ordain worshippers to acknowledge who YHWH is in His faithful, steadfast love. Moreover, “acknowledging” and “remembering” the Name of God is what God Himself commanded to be done when He first revealed His special covenant Name, YHWH, to Moses:
    God also said to Moses, “Say this to the sons of Israel, ‘YHWH, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, He has sent me to you. This is My Name forever, and this is My Memory (זִכְרִ֖י) from generation to generation.’ (Ex. 3:15, my translation)
    What does all this have to do with David’s prayer for YHWH to intercede for him before his accusers, as he is aware of his sin and God’s anger against him? In short, David is looking outside of himself to the character and provision of YHWH to graciously provide an offering and sacrifice that would satisfy

    I Corinthians 15: 45 The last Adam BECAME a life-giving spirit.

    Psalm 2:7–“You are my Son. Today I have begotten you.”

    Acts 13:33 clearly connects this declaration with the resurrection.
    Psalm 2:7 is adduced as proof of the statement “he has fulfilled [the
    good news] for us, their children, by raising Jesus; as also it is
    written in the second Psalm.”

    And Hebrews 1:5 quotes that Psalm to demonstrate that Jesus “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” So again the declaration “You are my Son” is connected with Jesus’ eschatological state

    The point is not who Christ is essentially, eternally, and
    unchangeably, but what he became in history, particularly what he
    became in history as the last Adam, or as Paul will say in 15:47, “the
    second man.” In view here is what has happened to Christ in history as incarnate, in terms of his true humanity.

    We may note further the undeniable reference to the Spirit in 2
    Corinthians 3:17, where Paul says “the Lord is the Spirit.”
    As the last Adam he is the “second man … from heaven” (v. 47) and in that sense he is the “man of heaven” (v. 48

    Without Christ being the life-giving Spirit in resurrection, He could
    never indwell our spirit to be our life (2 Tim. 4:22; Rom. 8:10)0
